Learn with annie

Join Annie for a quick video introduction to the ABCs of scientific drawing—drawing to learn, observe, and connect with nature. In this video, The Art of Noticing, science teacher Charlie Sittingbull introduces “waking up our animal senses,” then Annie shares some quick pointers for making scientific sketches. Annie is part of the Tend, Gather & Grow project team, and can attest to how much there is to learn about our beautiful bioregion and how all people can learn from the First Peoples of the Salish Sea, who have been positive, active participants in tending and cultivating this land for millennia.

Annie’s video lesson on making drawn and written field notes is an invitation to go outside, tune in to your senses, and learn new ways to draw outdoors. This 8 minute video shares a simple set of skills for bringing your sketchbook outside and drawing like a scientist. Great for ages 8+. The skills in this video are thanks to John Muir Laws and the California Academy of Science. Originally made for the Vashon Nature Center’s “Everyone Counts!” community science project.

I’m in awe of what the world reveals to us when we slow down enough to paint and draw what we see. And I share that wonder and excitement with kids and adults in classes on nature connection through drawing, including:

  • Start your nature journal habit—tools for beginning and keeping a habit of nature sketching (teens & adults)

  • Intro to taking field notes—foundational skills for scientists and students (age 14+, ideal for classrooms), how to combine pictures and words to tell a story

  • Connecting with plants in the garden and on the trail—deepening your connection with plant species through drawing. This class is part guided plant walk, part nature journal drawing practice.

Please get in touch if you’d like to bring these or similar sessions to your classroom, organization, or community space.
